Open Letter To The IGP, MTTU, Interior Minister And Media Houses

The inspector General of Police
Ghana Police Service-Accra

Dear Sir.
QUESTIONS ARISING FROM ALLEGED POLICE EXTORTION FROM A PRESS CONFERENCE, ORGANIZED BY MTTUD-GHANA POLICE SERVICE. LAST YEAR DECEMBER 2014.

I humbly wish to notify your office that, I watched your press conference organized in December last year 2014. It cited specific police station and the area I usually reside anytime am in Accra.

I live within Medina police command zone. I take keen interest in their activities. This is done everywhere I go in the country. I have never been afraid of approaching an officer for assistance everywhere. I am proud to say, I do cherished their zealous activities in the country. Though, some section of society, don’t appreciate their efforts as we all know.

It has come to my notice that, so many private security agencies have their personnel in uniforms similar to that of the police. They carry hand cuffs and even do arrest publicly. Sometimes, it’s always difficult to distinguish between a trained police officer and some of these private security men. At night, it might also be difficult for the public to differentiate between a trained police officer and these private men. This is all over the country including Medina and Adenta.

Nonetheless, city guards can’t be exonerated. In this country, we all know that every police officer is capable of arresting at any place they find themselves whilst in uniform when the need arises.

However, when a matter of extortion arises, everybody is quick to put the blame to the doorstep of the section of the police unit, MTTU; just similar to the press conference held some weeks ago.

My suggestion is that, for the betterment of doubt and blame game purposes, why can’t MTTD make it a policy, that all personnel appear in different uniform from their respective colleagues who wear same. Why can’t the department maintain the traditional white long sleeves permanently with additional blend? This I think can somehow eradicate unnecessary blame game which some innocent MTTU personnel are dragged into and can also reduce the public named tagged “money taking unit” instead of its respectable MTTU of the Ghana police service.
