Ashanti Regional Central Medical Stores Insured

The Ashanti Regional Central Medical Stores is the only such health facility in the country that has secured an insurance cover. The medical facility has been insured for the past four years.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Kumasi after the 2014 annual performance review of the Ghana Health Service, Alhaji Kofi Baryeh, the Regional Manager of the Medical Stores, disclosed that Provident Insurance Company provided the cover of Gh¢30,000 premium per month.

In January 14, 2015, the biggest drug storage and distribution outlet in Ghana, the Central Medical Stores, was engulfed in flames that destroyed almost all its contents. The facility, which was not covered by any insurance policy, belongs to the Ministry of Health.

The fire at the key distribution outlet lasted for over three days.

Fire prevention
Alhaji Baryeh said the insurance cover for the Ashanti Regional Central Medical Stores not withstanding, the authorities had put in place measures to forestall a possible fire disaster at the place.

He explained, for instance, that the  Central Medical Stores now had fireproof partitions and that the partitioning was part of the measures to ensure that should there be a fire outbreak, the fire would be contained.

Alhaji Baryeh added that closed-circuit television (CCTV), and video surveillance cameras had been installed.

The Regional Director of Health, Dr Alexis Nang-Beifubah, commended his predecessors for their foresight and ingenuity in securing an insurance cover for the regional central medical stores and promised to continue with it.
