BCI & PLH Offers Free Breast Health Education To GTP Dealers Association In Makola

Breast Cancer is the leading malignancy among women. Every 69 seconds a woman somewhere dies from this disease. The fight against the disease is a global one and Ghana is no exception.

Breast Care International (BCI) a leading Non-governmental Organization (NGO) with the vision to be a leading breast healthcare organization in Africa and the world is providing enabling environment to control the incidence of breast Cancer in women.

BCI has over thirteen years been conducting outreach programs for women, especially those in deprived communities in Ghana: educating, and clinically screening the public for breast diseases, especially breast cancer - the disease that has a matchless attitude to destroy the lives of women in their prime.

On Thursday the 5th March, 2015, the medical team from BCI and Peace and Love Hospitals led by their founder Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI and CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals, gave a pictorial presentation to the GTP Dealers Association in Makola - Accra on breast cancer, a disease that has become a matter of public health concern globally.

The exercise was initiated by the President of the Association, Madam Victoria Addo Kuffour and Madam Eva Buatsi, who is the Vice President of Peace And Love Survivors Association (PALSA)

The causes, risk factors, myths and misconceptions surrounding breast Cancer were highlighted; methods of investigation that include ultra-sound scan, mammography, clinical breast examination, and the types of Biopsies were explained to the participants. They were informed that breast cancer is treatable, survivable and curable if detected early. The women were taught how to properly perform their own Breast Self Examination.

The PA system that was mounted gave the opportunity for those trading in Makola market to also benefit from the outreach program.

Those gathered were given the chance to ask questions bothering them; answers to their questions were given by to their satisfaction. The Breast Cancer Survivors available shared their experiences to the amazement of all.

Madam Victoria Addo Kuffour on behalf of the women expressed her gratitude to Dr. Wiafe and her team for, their efforts and support. She entreated all participants to seek for medical attention and regular checkup.

The medical team clinically screened all the women for breast diseases, particularly breast cancer. Some suspected cases were referred for further investigations and management.

Present at the program were Mr. David Nikoi, the Manager of GTP and other executives of the association.
