Dormaa Municipality Records 418 Abortions In 2014

The Dormaa Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region recorded 418 abortions and 492 teenage pregnancies, according to statistics from the Municipal Health Directorate.

The Dormaa Municipal Health Director, Florence Nzilanye Iddrisah, noted that the phenomenon is highly unacceptable and needed pragmatic strategies by all stakeholders in reversing it.

Madam Iddrisah, in an interview with The Finder, attributed the teenage pregnancies recorded in the Dormaa Municipality to lack of knowledge on reproductive health.

She also noted that the health directorate, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, Ghana Youth Council and the Dormaa Municipal Assembly, is stepping up to help control the situation.

The Ghana Education Service, Ghana Youth Council and Ghana Health Service recently organised a float on the principal streets of Dormaa Ahenkro for basic school students in the municipality, to educate them on adolescent sexual reproductive health issues.

The Dormaa Municipal Chief Executive, Gordon Asubonteng, mentioned that Ghana needs a collaborative effort to address the issue of adolescent sexual reproductive health.

He said his outfit is ready to support this worthy cause in order to reduce abortion and teenage pregnancies.

For his part, the Dormaa Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service, Isaac Nsiah Edwards, urged the students to take their studies seriously and avoid bad company that may lead them into sexual immorality.
