Ridge Hospital In Dire Need Of O Negative Blood Group

The Ridge Hospital is making a passionate appeal to people with “O Negative” (0-) blood group to as a matter of urgency rush to the hospital and donate to the blood bank to help save precious lives.

The appeal was made by the Head of the Blood Bank at the hospital, Mr. Roger Yaw Cudjoe Adu in an exclusive interview with Atinka News on Thursday .

According to him, currently, there is no single unit of 0 negative (0-) blood at the blood bank  as  the Easter festive season approaches, adding that serious danger lies ahead if nothing is done. The demand for blood goes up during festive occasions such as Easter, Christmas etc.

Mr. Roger Adu explained that there has never been enough blood at the referral hospital but  it has been able to strategize to make do with the little it has.

However, the current situation where within a week, the hospital does not get blood from a donor who is 0 negative (0-), is making  the saving of lives  very difficult.

The head of the Blood Bank further explained that those within the 0- cannot use blood from any other category because it is not medically sustainable. He warned that many lives will be lost if the hospital does not get enough donors from that category as early as possible.

Mr. Roger Yaw Cudjoe Adu encouraged Ghanaians to frequently visit the hospitals to donate blood and desist from the mentality that, they will only donate blood when their relatives need it. This he said, is very deceptive explaining that when one donates blood, it takes five days to process the blood to ensure that it is disease -free before it is administered adding that blood must necessarily be stored at the bank  before it is used. He therefore warned that  their relatives maybe in extreme danger if they adopt such selfish attitude.

That notwithstanding, he also appealed to persons within the A (+-), B (+-), 0 (+-), AB(+-) blood type to voluntarily donate to any blood bank especially the Referral Hospitals like Ridge, 37 Military and Korle – Bu Hospitals
