Ghana remain in pole position to win the hosting rights for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations contrary to fast circulating reports that the competition will be handed to Algeria.
Ghana, hosts of the 2008 edition, are in contention with Gabon and Algeria for the hosting rights for the tournament which was originally to be hosted by Libya.
The race has however been narrowed down to a straight fight between Ghana and Algeria, with Gabon only hosting the competition jointly with Equatorial Guinea just three years ago.
Widespread reports in Algeria claim they will be named as hosts of the 2017 AFCON by CAF on Wednesday.
Various heads of national associations have converged in Egypt ahead of the commencement of CAF’s General Assembly which will end with the naming of the 2017 AFCON hosts.
Ghanasoccernet.com is reliably informed that Ghana’s bid stands a good chance of being successful. “Ghana is still in a strong position for the 2017 AFCON,” the source told Ghanasoccernet.com.
“I am not aware [in response to reports Algeria will be named as hosts] but that is only natural, isn’t it?” Ghana only need to upgrade existing facilities used in 2008 to host the 2017 AFCON.
There will however be an addition of a new stadium in Cape Coast expected to be completed at the end of the year.
The West African country wants to use hosting of the 2017 AFCON to unify the country just a month after an expected fierce contest in its general elections.
