Afoko, Agyepong Were Not Invited But Informed Akomea

Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has dismissed claims that the party’s General Secretary and National Chairman were not informed about the press conference organized by the flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, to address the crisis in the party.

According to him, “nobody was invited, people were informed, some of them were able to come but some were not able to come. I didn’t even see the National Organizer there because he was doing some other work.”

Nana Addo on Friday addressed the party members through the press, urging all feuding factions to “cease fire” and allow peace to prevail.

He also directed the private security at the party’s headquarters to allow the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and National Chairman, Paul Afoko to access their offices to carry out their work.

After the press briefing, there were questions about the absence of the two national executives at the event if truly, the flagbearer is aiming to unite the party.

Kwabena Agyepong in an earlier interview with Citi News however said he was only informed through a phone call from a member of the party’s Council of Elders, Ama Busia to listen to Nana Addo address.

Paul Afoko, on his part, also said he was neither invited nor informed to attend the event, but said he will continue to pray for peace and for reason to prevail in the party.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Nana Akomea stressed that apart from the media houses which were specifically invited, everyone else was informed.

He nonetheless indicated that the party will agree to the point that “if they [Afoko and Agyepong] in particular had been able to come, it would have been better” but he was quick to add that “it doesn’t detract from the statement by the leader of the party.”

Nana Akomea criticized the impression being created that the absence of Afoko and Agyepong gives credence to the fact that, Nana Addo’s speech won’t necessarily stop the in-fighting.

He argued that Nana Addo is the leader of the whole party and not the leader of one of the seeming factions within the party, it is wrong to deduce that the “man who addressed the press conference is representing a faction so the other faction has to be present.”
