VVIP hip-life group and some movie superstars have stepped up the monthly clean-up campaign by promising to clean the country of filth weekly. The weekly clean up exercise is said to be held on Saturdays from 6am to 9am and would be interspersed with musical performances.
The idea about for the weekly clean-up campaign was instituted as a result of the “Black Wednesday” tragedy, where the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and some parts of Accra were hit with torrential rainfall, killing people and destroying properties worth millions of cedis.
Hip-life artiste, Reggie Rockstone, who teamed up with Juliet Ibrahim to moot the idea said: “I have heard that there is more disaster to come, therefore, it is a wakeup call on Ghanaians to start cleaning their communities of filth, as well as de-silt all choked gutters to allow passage of running water”.
Reggie Rockstone, the originator of hip-life music in Ghana and now a member of the VVIP group, together with Juliet Ibrahim, a renowned movie actress launched the “National Weekly Sanitation Day,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
According to Reggie Rockstone, arm-chair revolution is useless; government must put in more effort at this crucial era of floods and fire outbreaks to wake the spirit of patriotism among the people of the country, towards proper waste disposal.
Reggie Rockstone urged his colleague artistes in the industry to ‘put’ their pride and celebrity ego aside and sink to the grounds on every Saturday to keep the cities clean, in order to avert any disaster.
He is hopeful that, their influence as celebrities will draw a huge crowd made up of the Ghana Police service, the Armed Forces, Footballers, Boxers and all Ghanaians from all corridors of life to join them on such occasions to clean the country of filth. Juliet Ibrahim added that their effort will come to a naught if government and its agencies do not support with the necessary materials to sustain this initiative.
1She appealed to the state agencies to enforce stiffer laws to punish persons who engage in wrongful waste disposal in the communities, like other countries do. The renowned actress also appealed to government to enforce the use of bio-degradable materials in the country, as this will eliminate the use of polythene bags and plastic materials such as pure water sachet and plastic bottles which are the major cause of filth in the country.
According to her, the Accra Major must put litter bins at vantage places to minimize the improper disposal of waste. Abdul Fatau Alhassan, the CEO of Broadway Entertainment and Road Manager for VVIP appealed to corporate Ghana to pull in their support towards this worthy cause to save lives and property, especially at this period where another disaster could rear its ugly head.
