West Hills Mall Alleged Robbers Face Judgment Today

The two accused persons, who have been standing trial for allegedly attacking a worker at Silver Bird Cinema in the West Hills Mall at Weija, will know their fate today when judgment on the case is passed.

Last Thursday, the two, Stephen Ayombah, 20 and Sulley Jali, 24 had opened their defense in respect of the case. They both denied attacking and robbing one Frank Owusu, a cinema projectionist at Silver Bird Cinema on May 24, 2015 of his Samsung Galaxy Mega G3 mobile phone valued at $500.They also allegedly attacked one Albert Adomako Mensah.

At an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, the two vehemently denied the charge of intentionally and unlawfully causing harm to Owusu and Mensah through gunshots.

The trial judge after hearing the parties fixed today to deliver judgment on the case.

Police investigations

DSP Ernest Acheampong said the police responded to a distress call from the Mall, and managed to arrest the two. He said one foreign pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition, an empty shell and a pair of scissors, which he exhibited before the court, were retrieved from them.

DSP Acheampong stated that the accused persons who were shooting indiscriminately at the premises of Silver Bird Cinema, shot at Messrs Owusu and Mensah and they were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The prosecutor said the accused persons stole the said mobile phone belonging to Mr. Owusu.

He said investigations showed that Jali, who is currently on bail, had been involved in a similar robbery and that the case was pending in the same circuit court.

DSP Acheampong further told the court that Ayombah, a cobbler, claimed he took the pistol from a Fulani man at Sandema and decided to rob with it to enable him get GH¢1,500 to settle the hospital bills of his pregnant wife who had been diagnosed with Hepatitis B.

According to Mr. Acheampong, further investigations revealed that after his court bail, Jali had been going to the West Hills Mall regularly, and took advantage of it to locate the accounts office which the two targeted.

Charges

The accused persons are said to have on May 24, conspired and robbed Francis Owusu of his Samsung Galaxy Mega G3 mobile phone valued at $500.

The prosecution, led by DSP Ernest Acheampong, told the court that the accused persons had intentionally and unlawfully caused harm to Messrs Owusu and Mensah through gunshots.

The accused persons have denied the charges of conspiracy, robbery and the two counts of causing harm preferred against them.
