This Is Shameful!

Reports about the interception of a vehicle laden with firearms and machetes when voting in the Talensi by-election was underway yesterday made worrying reading.

As if that was not enough, the so-called Azorka boys, notorious for their unruly and bloodletting conduct, were reported to have descended upon a number of NPP executives unprovoked, inflicting injuries on them – one of them serious.

If it is true that they were ordered to do so by the Interior Minister, who was said to be present when the thugs executed the order, then Ghana has retrogressed.

Such conduct is by all standards unbecoming of a minister of state, especially one holding the interior portfolio. We are unable to tell what such a highly placed minister wants young constables to learn from him as the president’s representative, if indeed what has appeared in the media is veracious.

Persons who would go to all lengths even if their country’s cohesion is threatened just so they would hold on to power, are unfit to hold public office because they do not have the interest of the nation at heart. Their many pretentious conducts when they address Ghanaians during public forums, are anything but sincere presentations.

Is this the kind of democracy we have always talked about? The tendency for such persons to be protective of their livelihoods come what may, is lamentable and paints a bleak picture of the country, if this crop of Ghanaians is allowed by the decent and law-abiding citizens to continue being at the helm.

We might not be any different from Burundi under that country’s president. Mayhem and the assault of persons were totally unnecessary in polls which were moving smoothly until the ruling party-organised thugs appeared on the scene.

After all, the ruling party claims to have taken development to the people of Talensi and so should not have doubted the willingness of the electorate there to vote for them.

What kind of a democracy do we want entrenched in this country when our leaders would descend to this level of unruliness?

Role models for our youth? Certainly not, when all they have in their blood is mayhem and dishonesty. God will save this country from vampires who know nothing but milking her without thinking about the repercussions of their actions.

We hear that suspects arrested for bearing the firearms illegally had one top NDC person pleading for their release in Talensi.

Be it as it may, we wish to congratulate the law enforcement agents on the ground for mounting the courage to intercept the vehicle and taking control of the situation when things started degenerating.

For law enforcement to be efficient and professional, it should be devoid of bias, with politicians staying off issuing orders to  commanders to act upon when these could be recipes for chaos.
