Public Relations Officer at the Police Hospital, Corporal Faustina Nunekpeku has admitted that the Hospital is now under pressure following the recent doctors’ nationwide strike.

Medical doctors under the umbrella of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) have laid down their tools to press home their demands for proper conditions of service.

That was after a meeting between the doctors and the Ministers of Employment and Labour Relations, Finance and Health ended in a deadlock.

The doctors subsequently declared a sit-down strike action to demand for proper conditions of service, amidst threats to resign en masse - they have refused to admit new patients, threatening that after discharging inpatients, they would shut down the hospitals and look for jobs elsewhere.

However, their strike has imposed an additional ‘pressure’ to doctors at the Police Hospital who are still at post.

Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show "Ghana Montie", Col Faustina Nunekpeku noted that – the Police Hospital's Outpatient Department (OPD) now cares for over 400 patients daily instead of 250.

She told host Kwesi Aboagye that – “Due to the pressure at the hospital now, management are considering to erect temporary tents outside to serve as additional wards to treat and admit patients”.
 
Doctors on leave she said are forced to return – “Those preparing to go on leave can’t go now until further notice”.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has said the striking Medical doctors should with immediate effect call off the partial strike action and attend to patients – but the striking doctors are yet to don their white coat [apron] again.
