Release On Extortion From The Media By The Electoral Commission Of Ghana

The Taxpayers Alliance Ghana is shocked to hear the Electoral Commission of Ghana is charging the Media before journalists are accredited to cover the ongoing 2015 District Assembly and Unit Committee elections. We find this to be backward and extremely unacceptable. The Media continuously supports society and this policy coming from the Electoral Commission is preposterous and dehumanizing. The media, which is also known as the fourth Estate of the Realm and a representation of taxpayers and society at all, levels should not be treated this manner. We demand for a full explanation of why this was allowed to happen. At the foundation of any free and fair society is a government that respects the freedom of the Press and upholds that principle by guarding against any efforts to dilute the open exchange of News and ideas and that the Media should not be made to buy information meant for the very taxpayers they represent. Taxpayers should never be put in a position where their hard earned contributions to Government coffers are used to support organizations that do no respect the freedom of the Press. Unfortunately, in the case of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, this is exactly what taxpayer and the Media are being subjected to. Taxpayers Alliance Ghana have a message for the Electoral Commission: we will not tolerate our governmental Institutions that harass and disrespect the Media. We therefore demand the EC to refund all those GHc8 collected and unconditionally apologize to taxpayers and the Media as a whole. Frank Asiedu Bekoe Executive Director Mobile:+233-246-705510
