The film, directed by Kenny Ortega - the choreographer of Jackson's planned shows at London's O2 arena - offers a behind-the-scenes look at preparations. This Is It will be released in cinemas on 28 October. "This film is Michael's gift to his fans," Ortega said.
It would give them a "very private, exclusive look" into the world of a "creative genius", he added. "For the first time ever, fans will see Michael as they have never seen him before, this great artist at work. "It is raw, emotional, moving and powerful footage that captures his interactions with the This Is It collaborators that he had personally assembled for this once-in-a-lifetime project."
Sony paid a reported $60m (�36.4m) for rights to the film, which is drawn from more than 100 hours of footage shot in Los Angeles between April and June. The singer died after suffering a cardiac arrest on 25 June, weeks before he was to have started the concerts.
Meanwhile, fans have swamped a website offering tickets to a Michael Jackson tribute concert in Vienna, organised by his brother Jermaine.
Promoters of the 26 September event said the site crashed more than half an hour before the sale's scheduled 1500 GMT start after a million people tried to access it.
Older brother Tito Jackson announced he would also be paying tribute to Michael while supporting Gladys Knight on her British tour later this year. The 55-year-old will perform hits penned by both Michael and The Jackson Five, as well as new tracks.
