NDC Biometric Registration: Bawumia Smells Rat

Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has suggested that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) could be well in bed with the Electoral Commission (EC) given the manner the former is conducting its biometric registration of members.

The ruling party is embarking on a nationwide registration ahead of its November 7 presidential and parliamentary primaries. But addressing members of the NPP at the 1st International Youth Conference in New York last weekend, Dr Bawumia explained is only taking names and voter Ids of its members in the name of biometric registration without using any machines.

He deduced that the NDC may have been getting access to the EC’s database as that could be the only way the NDC could get access to all the details and biometric data of those who register with their party. “Today, the NDC is conducting a biometric registration exercise of its members but what is happening is that all they are doing is to take the names and voters ID numbers of those who seek to register; they just take these two.

They don’t take fingerprints or pictures but they return with an ID card with your picture and biometric data. “So how does this happen? This can only happen because they have access to the EC database,” the former Deputy Central Bank governor alleged. “So, how can the NDC or whoever is managing their system have access to the EC Database?” Dr Bawumia suggested that this may have compromised the country’s voter register beyond an audit.
