Obour Saves Lives

The campaign urges every Ghanaian to send text messages worth GH1 to all mobile networks on short code 1947. It also forms part of activities to mark the joint 10th Anniversary celebrations of both the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). According to the hiplife icon, road traffic accidents are major causes of deaths worldwide. For him, all these could be best managed if such campaigns were supported with passion. Road traffic injuries, he added, caused disabilities to several degrees around the globe with death tolls of about 2 million. In Ghana, we continue to lose friends, breadwinners and the productive youth to accidents which are avoidable and manageable through sustained publicity and road user campaigns among others, he observed. Economically, he said, the country had lost about $165million since 2006, a figure he considered more than what we get as aid from development partners yearly. If we help sell best road safety practices through well coordinated and sustained road user education, campaign and environment, the country would be able to save as much as we get as loans and grants from donor countries. Mr. Noble Appiah, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), also called on the media to support this worthy cause since road accidents, as he put it, was not limited to just one person. He indicated that in the next 20 years, all focus would be on the fight against road accidents.
