Toyota remains the most sought after car in Ghana’s secondary automobile market, an online survey has revealed.

The Japanese brand with its Corolla and Camry models own the largest share of the second-hand car market in the country according to Tonaton – an online sale portal.

Toyota sales alone command a 33% share of the total car market in Ghana with Nissan and Kia following with 13% and 7% respectively.

The Tonaton survey considered car 10 different car brands in the country including Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Mitsubishi, Ford, Hyundai, VW and Daewoo.

The top three in-demand vehicles – Toyota, Nissan and Kia – constitute a mighty 53% of the total market per the survey.

Checks to various car garages in Accra by the General Telegraph backs up the findings from Tonaton’s survey.

According to most of the garage owners, a lot more Ghanaians show interest in Toyota vehicles due to their accomplished attributes of durability at relatively cheaper prices as compared to say the Mercedes, BMW or Ford.

“There is so much demand for Toyota models to stop prices from falling on the second-hand car market. It’s all about good value for money” remarks one car dealer at Tesano in Accra.

They however acknowledged that there have been an increased influx of Hyundai vehicles in the system but not enough to take over the massive market share of Toyota.

Between June and November 2013, about 22,000 cars have been listed on Tonaton.com and the site currently has 15,000 cars available for sale on the website.

Accra and Kumasi contribute about 82% of the second hand-cars that are traded on the online classifieds market in Ghana.
