Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru Limuna, the Northern Regional Minister, has stated the Government’s commitment to addressing the plight of the marginalised and the vulnerable, including the girl-child.
The Minister said this in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Seidu Abukari, the District Chief Executive of Tolon, to mark this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, organised by the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Center (NORSAAC), a non-governmental organisation, at Nyankpala.
The event was attended by representatives of the State and development partners, some parents, and students and pupils of some schools in the Tolon District, who staged a drama on the effects of not sending the girl-child to school.
The United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 66/170 declared 11th of October of every year as the International Day of the Girl-Child to promote the welfare and rights of the girl-child.
Alhaji Limuna said the government’s commitment to addressing the plight of the marginalised was amongst the reasons for renaming the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to give the needed protection to the vulnerable segment of society, who were mostly women and children.
He said the country had also put in place legislations, ratified several international conventions and created institutions to champion the interest of children.
He also underscored the importance of education saying, “Children being gifts from God to the society, it is our collective interest and responsibility to cater for all children irrespective of sex through education”.
