AUDIO: Ashanti Region Is Nobodys Battleground - Prez Mahama Declares

To ensure his continuity in power, President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are mapping out strategies to increase the votes they draw from the Ashanti Region.

Statistics from the 2012 general elections proves the NDC enjoyed massive votes from the region considered to be the stronghold of their main political rival- the New Patriotic Party.

It is on the back of this record that President Mahama believes his party can substantially increase their vote in the region.

In an interview with GBC's Garden City Radio which was also carried live on Okay FM, President Mahama said his track record in power would necessitate the huge votes they have set their eyes on.

“…NDC is going up in Ashanti and so our regional executives have set a target; based on the track record of the government and what we have done, they believe that we can increase our votes here. And I have been encouraging them to do so”, he said.

Ashanti is nobody’s battleground…If you have noticed, Ashanti is important to the NDC because they gave us the third highest numbers in the 2012 elections. They gave us the third highest numbers and so the Ashanti votes are very important to the NDC”, he added.

At the end of the keenly contested 2012 general elections, 1,531,152 votes representing 70.86% from the Ashanti Region were racked by the flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo Addo.

His main opponent who is the current president of Ghana racked 612,616 votes representing 28.35% from the same region.
