British Airways Explains Move To Terminal 3

British Airways says its decision to move Accra to London flights from its Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 is purely operational and not a downgrade.

“This is purely an operational decision, as we needed to consolidate our operations in two, instead of three terminals,” it said.

Some Ghanaian passengers have complained that moving Ghana from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 is a downgrade.

Reciting to the concerns of the Ghanaian passengers, Camilla Barret, Deputy Head of International Public Relations for Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and Middle East said a number of cities, including Accra, had been chosen for a mix of reasons.

She said the long-haul cities had been chosen due to the time of day they operate in and out of Heathrow and the type of 747 they use.

“We need to have a mix of short-haul and long-haul flights in T3 and T5 to make the most effective use of the stands and baggage facilities we have in both terminals,” she said.

She said by splitting flights between T3 and T5 also gives the airline the potential to grow its operations in the future.

British Airways last year announced that it would move several long-haul routes from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3.

Accra, Cape Town, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, Nairobi, Phoenix and Vancouver have all been moved as part of a consolidation programme to move to a two terminal operation, with the permanent closure of Terminal 1 in June 2015.
