PNC In Flames

Disagreements between kingpins of the People's National Convention (PNC) in the Western Region have thrown activities of the left-wing party into flames.

The Western Regional Secretary, Andrew Ben Arkah, and the Regional Chairman, Mallam Musah Yakubu, are engaged in a turf war.

The two leaders are virtually in contention over the soul of the minority group, which hardly makes any impact in the resource region in terms of organisation of its structures.

The regional scribe is heaping accusations on the chairman for putting impediments in the organisation of activities in the party. “Definitely his actions are improper,” he fumed in an interview.

According to the secretary, the regional chairman is clandestinely working to impose himself on the party again as Regional Chairman, instead of allowing delegates and members of the party to decide.

Due to this, he said, he confronted him on two occasions when he attempted to convince an unnamed official of the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare him an elected Regional Chairman with the support of his cohorts in the party.

Ben Arkah said he had to openly kick against the imposition on grounds that it was unconstitutional and undemocratic.

An absolute rejection of this autocratic move, he explained, has caused serious bad blood between them.

The secretary accused the regional vice chairman, Alhaji Danjummah, of legitimately siding with this illegality.

The two personalities, he noted, have to be blamed for the poor organisation of activities of the party, thus causing its dwindling fortunes in the Western Region.

He claimed that when he challenged their modus operandi in the handling and management of the party's affairs, they told him that the founder of the PNC, Dr Hilla Limann (late) used to handpick executives to run the party and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with their conduct.

In reaction to the opposition on their leadership style, the regional vice-chairman fired back, "The secretary said he is now a chief in Axim area, and therefore cannot do active politics again. So there's nothing wrong with what we are doing. There's nothing he can do too," he charged.

The disorganisation of activities of the party appears biting enough to cause its downfall ahead of Election 2016 to the extent that the establishment cannot boast of a single office in the region.

As a result, all regional executive meetings of the party are often organised at a drinking bar behind the popular Edzee filling station in Takoradi.

During a thanksgiving tour by Hassan Ayariga, the 2012 flagbearer of the party, he had no choice but to convene a meeting with the members at a hall in a seminary within the St. Mary's Senior High School at Apowa.
