The famous rapper and singer believes root causes of low attendances at league matches must be addressed instead of papering over the cracks.

Renowned Ghanaian rapper Obrafour has become the first musician to publicly slam Ghana Fa’s intention of inviting musical acts for league games as a way of attracting fans, but admits the step is not a totally bad idea.

In November, Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi revealed the body was in talks with some top musicians to herald Ghana Premier League games with performances in a bid to improve spectatorship.

“In general, it’s not a bad idea but then, the question arises: what do people want to come to the stadium to see? It’s football,” Obrafour was quoted as saying by Gazzetta Ghana.

“Why do you think the enthusiasm for football is low? That is where they should start from. They should look at why the attendance is very low and find a solution. I don’t think it is mainly about entertainment or bringing musicians on board. With that, you’ll pay the musician, it’s an added cost.

“In the past, there was so much attraction at the stadium when we watched Kotoko and Hearts matches without music but the matches were really interesting.

“Why has that changed and what steps are we taking to bring the fans back for matches like they used to a few years ago?

“We need to find out the problems…like how to pay the players very well so they play their hearts out. We need to sign good sponsorships for the league so that we get enough money to invest in making the league attractive.”

Nonetheless, other performers such as the VVIP have backed Nyantakyi’s idea.
