Real Madrid insane to appoint Zidane

The former Bayern Munich manager has criticised the Spanish giants for appointing the Frenchman as Rafa Benitez's replacement and questioned his ability to handle star players.

Zinedine Zidane has "won the lottery" and Real Madrid are "crazy" to appoint him as their new coach, according to legendary German trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld.

The former Madrid and France superstar was promoted to the top job on Monday following Rafael Benitez’s sacking, despite his lack of managerial experience.

Zidane, who assisted Carlo Ancelotti at the capital club and coached Madrid's Castilla side in the Segunda Division B, takes charge of the senior squad for the first time on Saturday against Deportivo La Coruna.

And Hitzfeld, who won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, believes the Frenchman should be thanking his lucky stars.

"For Zidane, it is like winning a lottery," Hitzfeld told Blick.

"It is an insane, crazy decision. He is a manager without any experience. He only lives on his famous name as a player.

“He hasn't proved anything as a coach yet and now he has to deal with the best players in the world."
