The hope of affected customers of collapsed micro-finance companies in the Brong-Ahafo Region; to reclaim their deposits were dashed as they mistook a press briefing organized by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) as the day of payment of their monies.
The slated press briefing went viral in town as hundreds of customers trouped the venue for their cash, last Friday at Sunyani.
Reports suggested that he bank officials were in town to streamline the modalities and mode of payment, but that was not to be as it turned out to be a press briefing.
A 36-year-old teacher, Richard Boakye, told The Ghanaian Times that he had information that the Central bank was in town to pay moneys of clients of the companies and travelled all the way from Berekum to collect his money, only to be told that it was just a press briefing.
Nana Yaa Fosu, a trader, also told The Ghanaian Times that all the clients want is their money and not the multiple press conferences being organized by the bank.
She lamented that her business had collapsed , making life unbearable for her and her three children and appealed to the government to assist the customers to retrieve their monies.
Mr. Michael Boateng, a farmer said he was disappointed with the Central Bank for sitting aloof and allowing the micro finance companies to dupe Ghanaians.
According to him, he was only relying on God to save him and his family forms the hardship they were going through.
But, Mr. Raymond Amanfu, head of Banking Supervision at the Bank of Ghana said the presence of the bank was not to pay the customers but rather organize the forum to set the record straight and outline measures being taken to retrieve their money for them.
