Rejoice Not Over Ghanas Corruption Rank - Vitus Azeem Tells Govt

The Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiative, Vitus Azeem has cautioned government not to be “happy” over Ghana’s latest Corruption Perception Index ranking.

“Yes Ghana has improved a little in its quest to fighting corruption, but that should not influence us because it is important for us to be interested in the score and not the ranking,” he was captured by Adom FM.

To him, Ghana must be more concerned about the score and not the ranking which he claim is not an indication that the country has improved in its bid to fight corruption.

“We must all condemn corruption and resist it, and government needs to do more and when that is done, there would be a vast improvement,” he stated.

The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) by anti-graft body, Transparency International, ranked Ghana 56th out of 168 countries in the world with a score of 47.

The figure shows a slight improvement in the fight against corruption in the sub-region compared to last year - It further ranked Ghana as the 7th least corrupt country in Africa.

According to a statement from the local chapter of Transparency International, Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), “The CPI 2015 scored Ghana 47 out of a clean score of 100 and ranked the country 56 out of 168 countries.”

Ghana scored below six African countries – Botswana – 63, Cape Verde – 55, Seychelles – 55, Rwanda – 54, Mauritius and Namibia which scored 53.
