Cashew�nut�farmers in the Nkoranza District in the Brong Ahafo Region are pleading with government to come to their aid.

The farmers, mostly from Kranka, Dorma-Kradaso and Brofoyeduru are totally deserted from all assistances other farmers benefit from government.

This came to the limelight when a survey was conducted by Good Governance Africa-West Africa (GGA-West Africa) within some selected farming communities in the region.

Expressing their grievances - the farmers called for a special board to regulate activities with respect to sales, market, farm inputs among others regarding cashew nut production as done for cocoa and other foreign exchange products.

They also nit-picked of the increasing high cost of labor, fertilizer, pesticides and other farm inputs.

According to GGA-West Africa - the central government�s grant on fertilizers does not benefit these farmers.

However, despite being the largest producers of cashew nuts in Ghana for exportation, the aged farmers noted that sooner or later, their farm products will die out if an alternative source of water is not produced for them for irrigation.

�We are pleading to the Central government and other individuals to construct dams to serve as a reserve and augment the seasonal rainfall pattern.� - This they said will aide them in cultivating other crops as supplements for the cashew nuts.

GGA-West Africa is however advocating for a more efficient and effective Agric sector which has the interest of all farmers at heart and does well to eliminate the stereotype of farmers being the poorest individuals in Ghana.
