The Unilever Ghana Foundation for Education and Development (UFED) on Thursday awarded 16 female graduates from the country�s public universities and polytechnics. The awardees were adjudged best graduating female students for the 2007/2008 academic year by their former institutions for distinguishing themselves in their courses. They received certificates of recognition and an undisclosed amount of monies Mr Andrews Quayeson, Chairman of Trustees of UFED who presented the awards, said names of the beneficiaries would also be put on the UFED Excellence Board located in their various institutions. Mr Quayeson said this would serve as a perpetual recognition and encouragement to other students to strive to excel in their studies. The Foundation, he said, had since 2000 spent GH�50,000 to award 150 graduates, comprising both males and females. The Chairman said it was the aim of UFED to instil the culture of excellence in Ghanaians and to demonstrate its importance through recognition and celebration of excellence to encourage others. Mr Quayeson said UFED�s concentration on females for this year�s award was in line with its quest to support the national effort to empower women as they serve as the engine of societal well-being and growth. Miss Helena Agyeiwaa, best graduating female for Higher National Diploma (HND) Building Technology from the Sunyani Polytechnic, thanked the Foundation for recognizing their hard work.
