Real Salt Lake confirm Akaminko talks

The Ghanaian is expected to be awarded a contract according to a top official of the American outfit.

The general manager of Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake, Craig Waibel, has revealed that the club are still in negotiations with Ghana defender Jerry Akaminko.

The former Heart of Lions centre-back has been training with the American outfit since his departure from Turkish side Eskisehirspor last month, and has also featured in trial games.

“That is a positive for my intensions with the player but the deal is not done,” Waibel told theTribune.

“But we’re in conversation with him and as of this moment, he’s a trialist but the club is still pursuing him. Jerry is a cerebral centre-back who also possesses impressive speed.

“We’re very fortunate to have brought Jerry in and we’re quite pleased because again, this is a high quality player with options that came into our environment and realised that this [trial] is something he wanted to be part of.”

Following his heyday in the Ghana Premier League where he was nominated for the Defender of the Season accolade in 2008, Akaminko joined Turkish side Orduspor with whom he spent three seasons.

He then transferred to another Turkish club Manisaspor in 2011, joining Eskisehirspor the following year.

The 27-year-old has 10 national caps for Ghana.
