Even God As EC Chair Wont Satisfy Critics - Nunoo-Mensah

Even if God were to be the chair of the Electoral Commission, some people in the country will still have cause to complain about Ghana’s electoral process and find fault with the elections, Brigadier-General Nunoo-Mensah has said.

The former national security advisor told Class91.3fm’s Executive Breakfast Show host Ekow Mensah-Shalders on Wednesday March 9 that “all this noise we are making” about the integrity of the EC Chair can be put down to the rottenness of human beings in general.

“If you are properly brought up as a human being, you will not do it [corrupt the electoral process], it is wrong. That is the problem of integrity, it is not the system, you can make God to come down and be the Electoral Commissioner (sic), we will still complain.

“The human being is rotten, that’s the problem, otherwise how do you believe that this lady will not do her work, unless you bring somebody else,” Brig-General Nunoo-Mensah wondered.

Ghana’s biggest opposition party – New Patriotic Party – and pro-opposition pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), have raised concerns about the integrity of Mrs Charlotte Osei as far as the November polls are concerned.

Their suspicions heightened recently after the EC empanelled some four people, who are allegedly members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), on an 18-member steering committee that is meant to help the Commission conduct the polls.

LMVCA and the NPP have also had brushes with the EC chair over their push for a new register of voters arguing that the 2012 register was not fit for purpose because it contained names of about 76,000 Togolese.
