Klottey Korle Wahala: Will It Be A Repeat Of KEEA (2012)?

History has a funny way of repeating itself. There is a possibility of what happened in the Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abrem (KEEA) constituency in the Central Region in the 2012 parliamentary elections repeating itself in 2016 at the Klottey Korle constituency in Greater Accra.

As per the enclosed results of KEEA (2012), Dr. Ato Quarshie lost the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary to the incumbent, Dr. Joseph Annan. He however, contested as an independent parliamentary candidate because his supporters threatened that if he did not, they would not turn up to vote for the NDC presidential candidate, President John Mahama. He placed second, beating Dr. Annan to second place.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate won with 38.1% (22,151 votes) and Dr. Ato Arthur, benefited from a split of votes among the NDC supporters/

A total of the votes of Quarshie and Annan was 29,523, close to the 31,777 votes obtained by President Mahama. Arthur had 22,151 votes, with the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo getting 19,699 votes.

As you read this piece, it looks likely that both the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Phillip Addison and the former constituency chairman, Nii Noi, will be on the ballot paper in Klottey Korle in 2016.

As a backgrounder, below is a related story, first published last Thursday (March 10).

Nii Noi going independent will be to Akufo-Addo’s advantage

The decision by disgruntled member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to go independent in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Klottey Korle constituency will benefit the NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Pollster Ben Ephson said yesterday.

“This is good news for Nana Addo and the NPP party as a whole. Akufo-Addo stands to benefit from Nii Noi’s decision- it would have been a big blow to Nana Addo if Nii Noi had not taken such a decision at all.”

He explained a sheer apathy by Nii Noi’s supporters could have threatened the chances of Nana Addo to make inroads in the Klottey Korle constituency during the November polls.

The defeated NPP parliamentary aspirant for Klottey Korle, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey had declared that he will contest the upcoming November Parliamentary election as an independent candidate.

This comes after Philip Addison secured victory in the re-run of the Klolttey Korle parliamentary polls conducted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He garnered 396 votes as against 367 by the former Constituency Chairman of the area, Nii Noi Norty.

Nii Noi, at a press conference at Osu in Accra yesterday stated that his decision was based on the fact that he has been unfair treated by the party.

He won the first primary organized by the party on August 2, however, Counsel for the NPP in the 2012 President petition case, Phillip Addison, who was a defeated aspirant, sued the NPP at the High Court, demanding annulment of the results.

An Accra High Court dismissed an application filed by the disputed parliamentary candidate, Nii Noi Nortey, which sought to set aside a default judgment thereby setting the pace for the opposition.

Below is a story about Nii Noi announcing his decision to be an independent parliamentary candidate:

Supporters of Nii Noi who are aggrieved by what they describe as unfair treatment by the part against their preferred candidate, last week besieged Nii Noi’s family house urging him to go independent in the upcoming polls.

Nii Noi Nortey who is a former constituency chairman, said after widely consulting stakeholders in the constituency, he is convinced that going independent is the surest way to win the seat and ensure development for the good people of Klottey Korle.
