Kwabena Donkor Returns To Post In Imminent Reshuffle

Less than four months after his resignation as Minister of Power ostensibly due to his inability to meet a self-imposed deadline to end dumsor, credible information reaching The aL-hAJJ indicates that Dr Kwabena Donkor is on the verge of returning to his former post.

The Pru East Member of Parliament, deep throat sources at the Flag Staff House have disclosed to this paper, is expected to feature in the upcoming reshuffle to be announced by the President soon.

This is contrary to speculations that deputy Minister of Power, John Abdulai Jinapor and or, Chief Executive of Tema Oil Refinery, Kingsley Awuah Darko has been penciled as possible replacement of Dr Kwabena Donkor.

The Power Ministry has been vacant since December last year following Dr Donkor’s resignation on New Year’s Eve due to what is now emerging as ill-health.

But many believed at that time that it was because of his inability to fulfill a promise to Ghanaians to resign his post if he was unable to solve the energy crisis by close of 2015.

Accepting his resignation, The President thanked him for “his services as the pioneer Minister for the Ministry of Power which was carved out of the then Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.”

However, despite a ministerial reshuffle early this year, the President is yet to appoint a substantive head for the Ministry. The Power ministry though, has been commended for virtually ending the debilitating power crisis which brought untold hardship to households and businesses.

Despite him having to resign, many have credited recent relative stability in power supply to the soft-spoken Pru East legislator.

Joining other well-meaning Ghanaians to pay tribute to Dr Donkor was no less a person than the President, John Dramani Mahama. Presenting his state of the nation address to parliament three weeks ago, President Mahama extended a hand of veneration to Dr Donkor for his leadership qualities which have brought about improvement in Ghana’s power situation.

“I salute the former Power Minister Dr. Kwabena Donkor, and his Deputy Minister John Jinapor and their team of competent technical people… It has taken teamwork and the cooperation of many people to achieve this success. I thank all who stood with me to overcome this challenge that our nation faced,” the president noted.

The President’s words of commendation, sources at the seat of government told The aL-hAJJ, is a feather in Dr Donkor’s cap, adding that “the former Power Minister is likely to return to post. The achievements at the power sector show that Dr Donkor showed leadership and commitment to solving the problem and his exploits are what we are enjoying now... It was just unfortunate that he had to resign.”

“Don’t be surprised if the president sends him back to the power ministry…he has a lot of work to complete there. He has done well,” a close ally of the president stated.
