Court remands members of car snatching syndicate

The Nsuta Circuit Court has remanded three members of a car snatching syndicate in police custody. Joseph Mensah alias Joe, 40, Prince Adu Amankwa and Lalas would re-appear on Wednesday, September 30. The Mampong Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Edward Oduro-Kwarteng, told journalists that the three have confessed snatching two taxi cabs from their drivers. The cars, a KIA Pride, and an Opel Astra, have been retrieved. He said at about 0300 hours on June 7, the police received information that a brown and yellow-coloured KIA Pride taxi cab had been hidden in a bush at Asaam, a small community near Asante-Mampong. They quickly moved to the area and investigations uncovered that it was Mensah who hid the cab there. Police Chief Superintendent Oduro-Kwarteng said he was therefore arrested after he failed to produce documents covering the vehicle. Mensah, during police interrogation mentioned Amankwa and Lalas as those who brought the vehicle to him and led the police to arrest them. He said their investigations revealed that the three hired one of the cabs from Kejetia in Kumasi to Tanoso New Site, a suburb. On the way they held the driver by the neck, then pulled a sharp knife and ordered him to get down and sped off. Police Chief Superintendent Oduro-Kwarteng said a search conducted in the houses of the three led to the retrieval of the other cab, an Opel Astra model. He expressed appreciation to the public for their co-operation with the police in the war against crime. The Commander appealed to people who have fallen victim to car robbery at Tanoso to contact the Asante-Mampong police for assistance.
