Childrens Hospital Cries For Assistance

The lack of medical doctors at the Princess Marie Louise Hospital, popularly known as the Children’s Hospital is affecting quality healthcare delivery at the facility.

Currently, it has only four permanent medical doctors and five Physician Assistants who cater for between 250 and 300 patients visiting the hospital daily.

The Principal Nursing Officer, Mrs. Margaret Amoah, disclosed this on Friday when the Vehicle Inspection and Technical Organisation (VITO) made donations to the hospital and the Osu Children’s Home.

The recipients each got 24 boxes of bottled water, 10 cartons of drinks and a sum of GH¢1, 000.

Mrs Amoah said the patients, at times, had to spend hours in queues to see the doctors, who had to attend first to patients on admission.

“This is a major problem facing the hospital, because the facility is the only specialised hospital for children in the country and, therefore, attends to hundreds of children daily”.

She appealed to the Ministry of Health to post more medical doctors to the hospital.

Mrs. Amoah said also that the facility lacked beds to admit those in critical condition, adding at when the situation becomes worse the children are paired to sleep on a bed.

She said the facility had a bed capacity of 84, which was not enough and called on benevolent individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the hospital.

She noted that most parents who bring their wards for treatment could not afford to pay for the bills and needed the support of the public to enable their wards get treatment.

The Chief Executive Officer of VITO, Mr. Samuel Oppong said the donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibilities.

He said the company, which is registered under the Ministry of Transport, annually donates to hospitals and orphanages as well as supports the needy in society.

The Manageress of the Osu Children’s Home, Christiana Addo thanked VITO for coming to the aid of the home and called on the public to come and support them.
