JBs Successor Takes Office

Parliament yesterday reconvened for the last but one meeting of the sixth session with the swearing-in of the newly-elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region, Gifty Twum-Ampofo.

She was elected in a bye-election to replace the slain MP for the area, J.B. Danquah-Adu.

The swearing-in ceremony was a mixture of grief and happiness by Members of Parliament (MPs), especially the minority NPP members, as the new MP took the oaths of office and secrecy and was later ushered in to take the seat of the departed colleague.

Speaker Edward Doe Adjaho advised the new MP to lead an exemplary life and also follow the footsteps of her predecessor who was a peace-maker.

He asked Ms Gifty Twum-Ampofo to be a unifying MP both in her constituency and in parliament.

Members from both sides of the House took turns to welcome the new MP by either shaking hands with her or hugging her. She assumes office with just about six months to go for the general election.

Ms Gifty Twum-Ampofo later told the media that she was humbled to step in the shoes of the late J.B. Danquah-Adu, adding that she would continue with the good works of her predecessor.

“J.B. left a great legacy and I hope to continue with that,” she said, adding that she would work hard to improve on the votes of the NPP in the constituency come November.

“The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) was afraid of me that is why they did not participate in the by-election; and I promise to make Abuakwa North a no-go area for the NDC,” she underscored.
