Krofuom Killing: MP Weeps

The circumstances that led to the death of a 22-year-old man in Krofuom in the Ashanti Region have saddened the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North Constituency, Collins Owusu Amankwa.

He has indicated that on Thursday June 2, he will organise a press conference to make his feelings known to the general public about the young man’s death.

The victim, Richard Osei, was allegedly beaten and tasered to death by some policemen on Thursday May 26, but an autopsy report has exonerated the Police from any wrongdoing. The report stated that Osei, also known as Kwadwo Tawiah, died of heart failure.

The report has irked the residents of the area who were convinced that the young man died after suffering police brutality.

Speaking with TV3 News on Tuesday May 31, the MP for the area, Mr Owusu Amankwa, said the autopsy report had aggravated his feelings and those of the residents of Krofuom.

He said: “I express my heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family and also make known to the public that there is going to be a one-week observation. After the one-week observation, personally I am going to organise a press conference to state our [NPP’s] position on the matter.

“As the Member of Parliament for the area, once you have the welfare of your constituents at heart, whatever they are going through you should also share the same sentiments. My people are not happy, likewise me.”

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, has called for calm in the community. He has urged the residents not to take the law into their hands as the matter is being addressed.
