The President of Ghana’s Head Porters Association, Adiza Moshie Zongo has registered two hundred and fifty members of her association unto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Accra.

Her benevolent act is to make it easier for the registered head porters locally known as ‘Kayayei’ to access medical attention at any given time.

In an interview with Peacefmonline.com, she explained that most of her association members could not make enough money to pay for health bills when they fall sick and this pressed her to assist them by enrolling some unto the NHIS.

Most of my members are people who have migrated from far areas within the country where there are no jobs and settled in Accra. And in Accra where they have settled to make it, they are not making enough money to pay for medical bills.

The situations of most head porters are miserable but I believe with the cards they have received, it would make things a little easier for them”, she said.

She was however quick to add that it was difficult for executive members of the Head Porters Association to mobilize the ‘Kayayei’ since most of them doubt hospitals which accept NHIS cards would attend them in times of need.

She explained that most of the ladies don’t believe the ruling NDC has done enough to make hospitals accept NHIS card and give patients better healthcare.

She added that when she spoke to most of them, she realized that they had heard the “cash and carry system” had not been scrapped under the Mahama led regime.

The ladies didn’t want to show up; they saw our action as a waste of time. We had to convince them to come and register but they doubt the card would do them any good. I believe the current NDC government has messed the system up and this scares the ladies”, Adiza Moshie Zongo said.
