Ashanti NPP Descends Haruna Esseku

Some leading NPP members in the Ashanti Region have issued a one week ultimatum to the Partys leadership to dissociate itself from former Chairman, Haruna Essekus comments on Citi FM that Alan Kyeremanteng should relax his Presidential ambitions for 2012 and pave way for Nana Addo and the other aspirants to vie for the NPPs flagbearership slot. Mr. Haruna Esseku in an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday September 29, called on Alan Kyeremanteng to discard his Presidential ambitions for 2012 and focus on the 2020 elections since he (Alan) does not have what it takes to lead the NPP to Victory in the 2012 elections. Instead, the former National Chairman of the main opposition Party believes the 2008 flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo is a better prospect and must therefore be given the chance to compete with any other interested person (other than Alan) for the flagbearership slot. He said: I doubt if Alan can win for the NPPHe should wait for the next eight years; he is still young. It should be Nana Addo or any other person the party shall elect. In reaction to Haruna Essekus comments however, some NPP leaders in the Ashanti Region, who believe the comment is a subtle endorsement of Nana Addo, are challenging the party's National Executive body to come out and dissociate itself from the comment and also demand a retraction from Haruna Esseku. They say his endorsement of Nana Akuffo Addo at this time constitutes a breach of the Partys constitution and it is likely to generate a premature campaign for other aspirants ahead of the partys congress next year. Mr Joseph Amoah, one of the aggrieved persons told Citi News that If in a weeks time we dont hear the partys National Executive or Nana Akuffo Addos campaign team dissociating themselves from it, then it means they have accepted the endorsement." He added that should the NPP leadership go silent on the matter, they(members of the NPP) would consider that campaign has started so they would begin a rigorous campaign for their favourite candidate for the 2012 elections. He questioned why Haruna Esseku decided to pick on Alan Kyeremanteng and not any of the other aspirants for the position and advised leadership to ensure a level playing field in its quest to elect a flagbearer for the 2012 elections. Why Alan Kyeremanteng and not the other people who are also aspiring because we have heard of Isaac Osei, we have heard of Professor Frimpong Boateng, then we know of Alan and Nana Akuffo Addo. So why Alan and no other person? I believe we must give ourselves a level playing field. He said.
