Admirers of suspended General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong relishing his reinstatement may have to wait a little while as the decision has been shelved by leadership of the biggest opposition party during deliberations at the last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The leadership, deep throat sources disclosed to The aL-hAJJ, had planned to discuss how to revoke Kwabena Agyepong suspension at their last meeting and prevailed on the National Council to approve Kwabena’s reinstatement, but had to hold it back because “The aL-hAJJ a day before the meeting revealed their intention.”
To avoid lending credence to this paper’s revelation on their planned action, some influential members of the party, according to our sources, “advised that the reinstatement of the former presidential spokesperson to his General Secretary post be postponement until such a time they find it appropriate”.
The planned recall of Kwabena Agyepong, party insiders had earlier told this paper, was to deplete Mr Paul Afoko’s camp. The suspended National Chairman together with his colleague suspended 2nd vice chairman, Mr Sammy Crabbe, are challenging their suspension in court.
Although an Accra human rights court had dismissed his action, Mr. Crabbe has vowed to appeal the decision. In the case of Mr Afoko, the court is yet to deliver judgment on his action.
Sources say the NPP and its 2016 flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, are beginning to feel the effect of Afoko and Crabbe’s court actions and are finding ways to weaken their camp by coercing Kwabena Agyepong to denounce them in order to be reinstated.
Prior to the judgment in the Sammy Crabbe case, the NPP had planned holding NEC meeting immediately after the verdict to announce modalities for reinstating the former sports commentator and civil engineer.
This was however not to be, following a publication by TheaL-hAJJ the same day exposing their intended action.
Even though the NEC meeting came on as planned, acting General Secretary of the Party, John Boadu, in a statement after the meeting announced the appointment of a new Director of Finance, Dr. Charles Dwamena, and a new deputy General Secretary, Mr. Bob Agbontor.
The statement explained that decision to appoint the two was taken by “the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) at a meeting on Thursday (2nd June 2016).”
“The meeting was also briefed on the outcome of the suit filed against the party by Mr. Sammy Crabbe, the suspended 2nd Vice Chairman of the Party. The outcome of the court case is victory for democracy and rule of law and a clear vindication of the party’s position that all members of the Party are equal before the law, ,” the statement added.
The statement did not touch on reports about Kwabena Agyepong’s reinstatement, but an insider told this paper that “they have to hold on with that because of your publication which exposed their plans.”
