President John Mahama has said he will not cast aspersions at his political opponents as the electioneering campaign heats up ahead of the November general elections.
According to him, he’s well cultured and was not brought up to speak ill about people who don’t share his opinion on issues.
President John Mahama has come under intense pressure in the past week following allegation of corruption leveled against him, after he received a $100,000 car gift from his Burkinabe contractor friend who has undertaken some construction works in Ghana.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for a bipartisan investigation into the allegation to establish his complicity or otherwise in the case. The party further dared President Mahama to speak publicly to the issue.
But addressing the people of Ashaiman during his ‘Accounting to the people tour’ Wednesday, President Mahama stated that it is clear his political opponents have no message for the electorates hence their resort to insulting his person.
“We have elections coming up and some people think they can win elections by insulting their political opponents and making insinuating against them. I was not brought up like that, I will not insult my political opponents…I will not make insinuation against them, it is God who will give us the President. It is His will that will be done and however much you insult your opponents, if God says you’ll never be President you’ll never be President.
“And so I just want to caution those we take to insult and insinuations and for persons who don’t have a message, elections are simple, it is about telling the people of Ghana what you can do for them and so I’m going around telling the people of Ghana what I have done and what I intend to do. And so if you think you can do better you also should go to the people and say what you’ll do if you are elected, don’t resort to baseless allegations.”
