Mahama Swerves NDC Activists, Pupils

Hundreds of enthusiastic supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and school pupils who were hoping that President John Dramani Mahama would be visiting the Anglican Basic School, went home largely disappointed when the president rather went to Ashaiman.

President Mahama was scheduled to commission a newly constructed 3-storey 12-classroom block with ancillary facilities at the Manhean Anglican School at Tema Newtown after paying a courtesy call on the Tema Mantse and addressing supporters at the Kplejoo ground as part of his ‘accounting to the people’ tour of the Greater Accra Region last week.

The president decided to go to Ashaiman instead after meeting with the Tema Traditional Council and speaking at the Kplejoo gathering.

Although the school was decorated with ribbons and the plaque President Mahama was supposed to unveil to commission the building covered in anticipation for the arrival of the president, he swerved them.

The pupils, from three schools namely, St Mary’s Anglican, St. Peter’s Basic and Anglican Cluster of Schools, were very enthusiastic to welcome the head of state at the end of his tour, which was going to offer them the opportunity to see the president for the first time in their lives.

Some of the pupils who spoke to DAILY GUIDE when news got to them that the president was not going to show up, stated that they were very much disappointed because they were eager to see him for the first time.

According to one of them, “The president has disappointed us because we were eager to see him that’s why we have been standing here for several hours. We only see him on television and today was going to the opportune time for us to physically see our president.”

Party supporters declined to comment on the president’s ‘no show’ issue and rather moved to their various buses which conveyed them to the venue.
