Tema To Regain Lost Glory Prez Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has given an assurance that Tema will regain its lost glory. The assurance was given by the President when he took his “Accounting to the People” tour of the Greater Accra Region to the Harbour City on Wednesday.

Over the years, a number of the things that made the city tick have crumbled, leaving desolate sights.

But at a durbar at Tema New Town, the President remarked, "There are a lot of good things coming to Tema."

Outlining some initiatives to bring the city back to life, he said the industries that used to be the economic driver of the metropolis would be revived. Already, he said, the sleeping Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) had woken up and making giant strides in its operations.

Concerning roads, the President said: "We are going to begin major road works in Tema."  It would include 20km of asphalted roads, he said, adding that the Tema Roundabout was going to be developed into an interchange.  President Mahama dismissed reports in certain circles that the asphalting resealing of the Nungua Barrier-Tema Beach Road was financed by a shopping mall.

"The beach road was built by the government of Ghana and not any shopping mall," he told the ecstatic crowd.

He said very soon the ultra-modern Maritime Hospital built by GHAPOHA would be inaugurated, while facilities at the Tema General Hospital would be upgraded.

He said before the end of this year, the agreement for expansion works at the Tema Port would be signed. President Mahama said the regional tours were important because they brought to the fore developments taking place across the country.

"Everybody has got something," he indicated, but added that some people had refused to see the good things the government was doing.

The Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Krakue II, said it was time the Tema Port started paying royalties to the Tema Stool.

He said that was because the port, which was originally established as a non-profit making entity, had become a profit-making establishment. He commended the government for the development projects provided in the metropolis.
