Assembly members of the Kumbungu District Assembly in the Northern Region on Thursday boycotted the assembly’s sitting over disagreement of unpaid End of Service benefits (ESB) due previous members.
The members who were supposed to meet for the first time this year walked out of the meeting when the District Chief Executive (DCE), Alhaji Alhassan Musah stood up to address the house.
The assembly members started walking out as soon as the presiding member of the assembly, Iddrisu Dawuda, called on the DCE to give his address.
They vowed never to attend any meeting and other functions of the assembly until the ESB was paid to their predecessors.
There had been a stalemate between the assembly members and the assembly over how much to pay the previous members majority of who are still in the current assembly as ESB.
While the members are demanding GH2, 000 the assembly is offering them GH1, 000.
According to the assembly members, the proposed GH1, 000 by the assembly was woefully inadequate and therefore they would not accept it.
“We will not accept anything less than the GH2, 000” the assembly members were heard shouting while leaving the assembly hall.
Not even the plea of some members of non-governmental organizations who had come to the meeting to discuss with them on how to implement one or two projects in the districts could change the stand of the assembly members.
The DCE, Alhaji Musah, declined to comment on the issue.
A staff of the assembly who spoke on the condition of anonymity told to The Ghanaian Times that the assembly did not have enough funds to pay the members because it always fails to meet its revenue target.
He further indicted that assembly members EBS should be paid through the Internally Generated Funds (IGF)
