Koku Anyidoho Takes On Judges

Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, says the Supreme Court should be allowed to run elections in the country.

“The supreme court should take over the job of the EC so that Charlotte Osei (EC boss) and Amadu Sulley (deputy) will vacate their posts for Georgina Wood and the Supreme Court to organize the election,” he blasted the justices.

He said it was very unfortunate for the Supreme Court justices to make a pronouncement that the EC would plunge the nation into chaos.
He could not fathom why the apex court through its actions, is seemingly interfering in the operation of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Koku Anyidoho’s comment was in reaction to the directive by the Supreme Court to the EC to furnish it with a “comprehensive” list of all persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards prior to the 2012 elections.

The Supreme Court, in a bid to give further interpretation to its May 5 judgment on the controversy regarding the voter register, has directed the EC to furnish it with a “comprehensive” list of all persons who registered with the NHIS cards in order to expunge them and give them fresh chance of re-registration.

Additionally, the court directed the EC to develop a guideline on the specific processes and methods they intend to adopt in implementing the May 5 order.

The order followed the confusing interpretation that ensued between the EC and Abu Ramadan and one other – the plaintiffs who went to court to seek interpretation of the legality or otherwise of such names in the electoral roll.

Though the EC had given the assurance that it would meet the June 29, 2016 deadline given it by the Supreme Court, Koku Anyidoho believes the order is an attempt to do a new voter register.

“It is not possible that the SC will tell the EC what to do because I know the EC in its own way is discharging its duties as an institution and so it is better to allow the Supreme Court to run the elections, if it feels the EC is inefficient.

Koku Anyidoho indicated that since the names of people who registered with NHIS cards could prove their citizenship, their names ought not to be deleted.

“The NHIS card has been in existence for long and so I don’t understand why they should still demand the list. If the Supreme Court receives the list, what next will they use the names for?” he quizzed on OkayFM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ morning show programme on Friday – a day after the ruling on the controversial voter register.
