Market Women Plan To Stage Demo Against Prez Mahama In Ashanti Region

As President Mahama planned to take his ‘accounting to the people tour’ to the Ashanti Region, some executives of the National Democratic Congress were quick to allege that they have picked up intel that members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are scheming to demonstrate against the president.

In a statement signed by the NDC’s Ashanti Regional Communication Officer Samed Akalilu, he described the planned demonstration ‘as a sign of ungratefulness if not wizardry, on the face of the unparalleled infrastructural developments given this region by His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama over the past three years’.

He further alleged that “a cross-section of NPP supporters in the region plan embarking on demonstration to distort President Mahama’s ‘accounting to the people tour’ which will take place in the Ashanti Region beginning June 28, 2016.”

But investigation by Peacefmonline.com has also revealed that though there could be political actors hatching plans to demonstrate against the president, some market women are also planning to do same.

Peacefmonline.com spoke to some market women who were mainly importers of textiles and they made it clear that they are disgruntled about the high taxes they pay on their commodities.

They revealed that they would be visiting the Asantehene tomorrow to register their displeasure and would make sure the president feels their pain.

President Mahama has already sufferd the same faith when he and his entourage were hooted at by some mourners during the funeral of the late Bantamahene, Baffour Asare Owusu Amankwatiah V.

The situation led to a petty scuffle between security forces guarding the President and the mourners and it took the intervention of a combined team of police and military men at the venue to restore calm.
