Lower-West Akyem NDC Candidate Sure Of Victory

Ms Benedicta Naana Ampem, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Lower West Akyem Constituency, says she will win the seat because of President John Mahama’s good governance policies.

The candidate, who is contesting the seat for the first time, said the valuable initiatives of President Mahama, in the last three and half years would break the record of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 16 years of occupying the seat to enable her to initiate the much needed development projects for the area.

Ms Ampem said the NPP’s hold on the seat, would be broken on November 7, because of the compelling record and evidence of the Better Ghana Agenda pursued by the President, resulting in massive infrastructural development.

Ms Ampem, a business woman and a former National Coordinator for the “Youth for Mahama’ in the 2012 elections and women’s organiser of the constituency, said the people in the area have seen the difference in the John Mahama led-administration and would provide her the needed support.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA at Asamankese under the “Women’s’ Platform Initiative”- aimed at projecting all the women contesting the Parliamentary elections, said the construction of the Suhum-Asamankese, Asamankese-Kade, Asamankese-Adeiso roads were some of the projects that would speak for the NDC in their effort to capture the seat.

She said apart from the useful initiatives of the President which would be the basis for her resounding victory, the motherly role she played to all women and children in the constituency was another plus that would ensure her victory.

The Lower West Akyem seat has been one of the safe seats of the NPP, since 2000 and Ms Ampem is contesting Mr Eyiah Kyei-Baffour of the NPP, who won the primaries against the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Ms Gifty Kleenam.

Ms Ampem said her decision to contest the parliamentary seat was to have a larger platform as the people’s representative to be able to champion issues concerning the economic and social empowerment of women and girls in the area.

She said she had already instituted a loan facility without interest to support over 200 women in petty trading to expand their trading and improve the wellbeing of their families.

Ms Ampem said “I give the loans to all women irrespective of their background or political affiliation because I believe that I would represent the entire constituency and not a section of the people from my party” when given the nod.

In addition, the candidate said, she had adopted the Osenase Orphanage where over 100 orphaned and vulnerable children are being catered.

Ms Ampem, who beat two male contestants at the primaries, is married with four children and appealed to the people in the constituency especially women to look beyond colors and party affiliation and vote massively for her.

The candidate called on party supporters not to use violence in the campaign activities leading up to the election to ensure that peace and unity is maintained as demonstrated by both the NPP and NDC during a recent peace walk.
