Okraku Mantey Takes Over GAPI

The Ghana Association of Phonographic Industry (GAPI), made up of music producers in Ghana, last Wednesday elected Mark Okraku Mantey of Slip Entertainment, with overwhelming majority, as the new chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC). The committee is to oversee the organization of the election for a new board of trustees for the association. He replaces Sarpong Mac Abraham who stepped down as the chairman following the inability of the election of a new board of trustees on October 2 2009, as a result of a court injunction restraining the association from going ahead with the election. Mark Okraku Mantey is one of those clamouring for change in an industry where manipulation, bad governance, among others, is bankrupting record label owners and musicians alike. Mark, popularly known for his no nonsense approach on Mentor Reality Show on TV3, where he has been a judge since its inception, thanked the general assembly for the honour. He pledged to work with the committee to conduct a successful election in the shortest possible time. In a related development, the outgoing General Secretary, Francis Mensah Twum, has been appointed projects coordinators for negotiations with government, World Bank, and all the donor agencies in an attempt to consolidate the fashioning out of business friendly policies to resuscitate the ailing music industry.
