Kufuor Rubbishes Claims

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has described allegations by Dr. Sipa-Adja Yankey linking him (Kufuor) to the Mabey & Johnson bribery scandal as farcical and frivolous. Dr. Yankey is reported to have cited former President Kufuor and the British High Commissioner to Ghana as the brains behind his indictment and allegations of having taken 10,500 as bribe from Mabey and Johnson, a construction company in the United Kingdom. Frank Agyekum, on behalf of the former President said Mr. Kufuor has no hand in it like Dr. Sipa Yankey is trying to suggest. Mr. Frank Agyekum added that there was no way the former president could be fingered for being behind this saga since President Kufuor cannot direct the UK SFO to initiate investigations into M&J and ask them to name the people who have been indicated in the matter. He said he found it strange and absolutely bizarre for someone to link Mr. Kufuor to this scandal on the basis of his personal friendly relationship he built with the British High Commissioner. Nick Westcott according to Mr. Agyekum was only one of Mr. Kufuors friends in high places. Mr. Agyekum who spoke to this paper yesterday questioned why Dr. Yankey questioned why Dr. Yankey would suspect former President Kufuor of being involved in his indictment when he strongly holds that he has never taken bribe before. It would be recalled that the deputy finance minister under the Rawlings led NDC government claimed that on the day of the president run-off of last year, he was hinted that the British High Commissioner to Ghana was in the residence of the then NPP flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo suggesting that the High Commissioner and the former government could possibly be behind this scandal. Last Friday Dr. Yankey and another Minister of State, Alhaji Amadu Seidu tendered in their resignation letters to the President. Dr. Yankey said his resignation was as a result of his wish for his good name to be cleared and his innocence proven.
