NHIS Boss Not Happy

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance, Hon Sylvestre Mensah has expressed dissatisfaction about the deliberate attempt by some scheme managers, accountants and claims managers to loot funds meant for the scheme in the Ashanti Region. Addressing a media conference in Accra, Hon Mensah disclosed that after weeks of investigation conducted into the regions schemes, findings have shown that some of the scheme managers and staff have engaged in massive corruption, which was threatening the sustainability of the scheme. He maintained that the system had been seriously abused and reaped after some names were mentioned and even suspended. He said his office was ready to clear the system of fraud, hence the need to bring on board the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) to deal with all officers who have indulged in misappropriation of public funds. According to Hon. Sylvestre Mensah, at the Asokwa Sub-Metro Scheme, monies meant for payment of provider claims amounting to GH569,104.02 could not be accounted for. He said Sekyere East misapplied GH800,000 meant for claims for other purposes and also the accountant could not account for GH66.121 of premium and processing fees. The Scheme managers and accountants have been called to assist the Ashanti region SFO and have been advised to cease doing business with unaccredited providers such as yaw Western Pharmacy and St. Dominic Pharmacy. Ironically, the Scheme has spent a whooping amount of GH23,707 on preliminary expenses towards acquisition of land and the land was yet to be acquired. Hon. Mensah stated that after collecting GH5,145 premium, the Ejisu Juabeng Scheme Manager could not account for any per diem and has been asked to refund the money. He expressed shock at Offinsoman where those who do business with unaccredited providers and who do not submit claims but do get reimbursement for services provided and these unaccredited providers are Apikrist and A.A. Adams Pharmacy.
