Statesman Opinion: Ghanaians Have Already Declared A Vote Of No Confidence In Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama and his functionaries never feel easy whenever the Running Mate of the New Patriotic Party speaks on issues relating to their incompetent handling of the economy.

Their abortive attempt to frustrate the latest lecture on the economy delivered by Mahamudu Bawumia yesterday, therefore, came as no surprise to any discerning Ghanaian.

The worry of President Mahama and his functionaries has always been occasioned by the fact Dr Bawumia always exposes their lies and deception about the economy. And the foundation of the governing NDC is always shaken when the truth about their mismanagement is told.

The nation has had to suffer for eight years under an insensitive, incompetent and corrupt government that has officials looting from the state kitty as it there is no tomorrow, with a president who can take a Ford Expedition vehicle from a contractor doing business with the country and claim it was a gift for the nation.

The many lies and deception that are being used to govern us in this country are very nerve-racking. President Mahama and his government will gamble with serious national issues in order to entice the majority of Ghanaians who have lost confidence in their government.

Some people have even been wondering how President Mahama and the government can have the moral courage to demand another term from the electorate, after their so-called ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ has plunged Ghanaians into a complete state of hopelessness.

After serving Ghanaians with poverty, joblessness, collapse of social interventions, power crisis, massive corruption, among others, in the last eight years, Ghanaians are convinced another four years for them will mean total blackout of the economy.

The introduction of many taxes, high tariff hikes and the rapid depreciation of the cedi, among other inimical economic factors, have combined to squeeze the private sector out of business. This, coupled with how the nation’s scarce resources are being spent recklessly, is what has brought Ghana to its present horrible state under the watch of President Mahama, with increasing joblessness and worsening poverty among the masses.

As Nana Akufo-Addo reminded the nation yesterday, about 48% of Ghanaians between the ages of 15 and 24 are unemployed, whilst over 18% of those aged between 25 and 64 years are inactive or unemployed and actively looking for jobs.

This unprecedented high level of unemployment, in the view of the NPP flagbearer, is “the greatest challenge confronting our nation, particularly amongst the youth”, and addressing this matter is certainly the only way by which we “can then guarantee the peace and stability of our nation.” Unfortunately, this is one area the Mahama government has failed the nation woefully.

And having realized their record in government cannot move the electorate to give them another term, President Mahama and his government have resorted to sharing freebies in a desperate attempt to buy votes. But it is clear this strategy cannot work again because Ghanaians have already declared a vote of no confidence in President Mahama and his government.
