2.2m Die Of Food Poison In Africa

The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Benjamin Kumbour, has said about 2.2 million people die from food borne diseases in Africa annually. He said this at a forum on food safety organized by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Drug Board (FDB) on Tuesday in Accra. The topic for the forum was �Achieving Food Security in times o f crisis, the Role of Good Safety.� The Deputy Minister said food-borne diseases and food security are major concerns of most government which the ministry in collaboration with the WHO and other organizations are devising a new initiatives on food safety. Food safety must be given a requisite attention, he said. Nii Amasah Namoale, the Deputy Minister for Fisheries, said the wrong use of agro chemicals can negatively affect food safety which can be harmful to human health adding �if a plant is contaminated, it�s produce is also contaminated.� Other dignitaries who were present at the forum include Mrs Akosua Kwaky, WHO representative, Mr. Musa Saihou Mbenga, FAO representative, Dr. Stephen Opuni, the Chief Executive Officer of FDB, among others. Video clips were shown on how to keep food safely for human consumption.
