Indonesian Customs Foils Largest Drug Smuggling Attempt

The Indonesian customs office stationed at the Jakarta International Airport has foiled the largest drug smuggling attempt, involving a new drug smuggling gang, Indonesian Customs Chairman Anwar Suprijadi said here on Wednesday. "This is the largest foiling of drug smuggling attempt conducted by the customs office at the Soekarno-Hatta airport," the customs chairman said during a press conference to announce the arrest. He was referring to the Jakarta international airport. The customs office dismantled the smuggling of 26,852 grams of drugs from the type of crystal methamphetamine and 22,800 milliliter of liquid form of the drug worth 102.064 billion rupiah (about 10.9 million U.S. dollars). Anwar said that the smuggling was conducted by an Iranian gang that consisted of 10 people. They entered Indonesia with those drugs from Doha, Qatar, he added. The dismantling of the attempt was conducted from Monday to Tuesday at the Indonesian international airport. One of the suspects tried to commit suicide by cutting the blood vein in his arm with a razor blade, Anwar said. "The suspect, JV, is being treated in a hospital at the moment," Anwar said. Citing the existing drugs and customs laws, Anwar said that all ten suspects, who comprised of men and women, would face at least 15 years imprisonment and a total fine of 1.3 billion rupiah (about 138,371 dollars).
